Booker Hate City Book #Review

After a life filled with destruction of others and himself, and his body ravaged by disease, there's only one thing left for Javier Calero to do. Leave a legacy that will finally bring meaning to his life—and to the death of an American president more than fifty years ago.

The CEO of a green energy company is murdered behind his million-dollar estate, his neck nearly severed in two. Recruited to aid the widow and find a savage killer, Booker finds himself in the middle of a family train wreck.

Days later, thrust into the crossfire of a deadly sniper, Booker eludes sure death with the uncanny arrival of a young woman who only wants to save her father from harm. But she can't do it without Booker's help.

Joining forces with a Latin spitfire, Booker and his new sidekick, Maggie, embark on a twenty-four-hour quest to hunt down a killer determined to make an indelible mark on history—just like the one that struck down John F. Kennedy a half-century earlier, which launched a cascade of assassination investigations and theories.

My Review:
I received a free copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review.

Booker T. Adams is at it again with another engrossing mystery.  Someone has murdered Albert Yates, CEO of Evergreen and everything leads to a dead end.  Then a librarian turns up dead, killed in the same manner as Albert Yates.  While helping out mob boss Scampiani, he's caught in the cross hairs of a gun fight, that opens his case wide open.  The story takes us back to the Kennedy assassination and all of the rumors linked to it.

This was a great read and an interesting look at the Kennedy assassination.  I could feel Magdalena's pain as she realized that her father had turned into a killer.  I also love the chemistry between Alisa and Booker, I wonder if they will ever realize that they would make a great team outside of Booker and Associates.   I was shocked that Justin was thinking about selling the bar considering all of the hard work he invested from book two. All in all, this was an amazing novel filled with unexpected twists you won't see coming!

About the Author:

The Choosing Book #Review

Synopsis:
“Not to be Chosen would yield a cruel fate of my own making.”

Like all citizens since the Ruining, Carrington Hale knows the importance of this day. But she never expected the moment she’d spent a lifetime preparing for—her Choosing ceremony—would end in disaster. Ripped from her family, she’ll spend her days serving as a Lint, the lowest level of society. She knows it’s her duty to follow the true way of the Authority.

But as Carrington begins this nightmare, rumors of rebellion rattle her beliefs. The whispers contradict everything she’s been told; yet they resonate deep within.

Then Carrington is offered an unprecedented chance at the life she’s always dreamed of, but she can’t shake the feeling that it may be an illusion. With a killer targeting Lints and corruption threatening the highest levels of the Authority, Carrington must uncover the truth before it destroys her.

Pre-Order from: Amazon | Barnes & Noble

My Review:
In 2111, a vaccine was created to cure all illnesses, mutating as diseases did.  What they didn't plan on was the antibodies attacking themselves and causing a large percentage of the population that was vaccinated to die.  Those days were called The Ruining.  One hundred years later, a group of survivors gathered and were led by Robert Carson, in a new religious world.

The year is 2257, Carrington Hale has spent her whole life preparing for this day, her Choosing.  She is taught that she is valued by how prepared she is for this big day and whether or not she gets chosen.  To Carrington's dismay, despite her training and high marks, she isn't selected.  Those not chosen are sent away to work as Lints, the very lowest class, never to see their families again.  Will her friend Larkin be able to get through to her? Will she listen to the voice that continually tries to reach her in the quiet?

Rochelle Dekker has written a wonderful debut novel.  The depth of the characters are amazing.  In addition to Carrington's struggles, there's a mystery in the backdrop that also had me intrigued and engrossed throughout the novel.  Although this was a dystopian story, I could actually see the plausibility in it.  This was a brilliantly written first novel and I can't wait to see more from this author.

**I received a free copy of this novel from Tyndale House Publishing in exchange for my honest review.**

About the Author:
She is a daughter, a sister, a wife, a writer, a friend, a cat lover, and a believer.
However, these are all just roles and though she loves these roles very much, who she truly is cannot be fully addressed because that is something she is still discovering.
Of course, self-discovery is a constant journey where hard questions must be asked but Rachelle knows two things for certain. First, that she is no different than anyone else, because in the deepest place in every person’s heart there is fear, doubt, stress, pain, worry, sorrow, joy, thankfulness, peace, love, success, and happiness. Second, Rachelle knows that she is loved perfectly and wholly just the way she is. Loved in a way that, while may not make sense to many, is wonderful and fulfilling. In a world filled with people searching for worth, acceptance, and a place to belong, she has learned that in searching for these things, she is worth the world, accepted long before she went looking for it, and she belongs right where she is at this moment.
Rachelle continues her never-ending journey and invites you to join her. Whether you are already diving deep or still standing on the shore the journey is going to be wild. There may even be some water walking.

My Review:
I received a free copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review.

Janie and Marly had a happy childhood, that is, until the tragic car accident that took their father away from them.  That's when their lives were forever changed.
Janie Knox spent most of her life running away from her past.  But when her doctor diagnoses her with inoperable cancer, Janie drops everything and returns to her hometown of Atlanta to tie up loose ends.  Her family is surprised to see her, she had left after her stepfather was convicted of murdering her mother, planning never to return.  She had basically abandoned her sister and never kept in touch.
When she arrives in Atlanta, she reaches out to her sister.  Not only is she not greeted warmly by Marly, but Janie can see that she's clearly drunk.  Marly tells her that their stepfather was released from prison two weeks earlier and he's been harassing her for information on the night of the murder.  The night she still doesn't remember anything about.  The part that upsets them both the most is that Ralph has taken up residence in the old house; their dead mother's home.
As Janie keeps her illness secret, she sticks to her plan to put things in order; she also becomes determined to exact revenge on the man she feels responsible for her mother's demise.
As The Clock Strikes Midnight is a gripping suspense novel that has you at the edge of your seat the entire time.  My heart broke for both Marly and Janie as the story of their past began to unfold.  Some of it hit home and i found myself tearing up a bit.  Madly and Janie could easily be a friend or even a neighbor, this was a story about family secrets and how they can destroy us.

But from their first meeting, Nathaniel and Sophia begin an intense romantic relationship that despite many setbacks leads to their marriage. Together, they will cross continents, raise children, and experience all the beauty and tragedy of an exceptional partnership. But their children’s needs and the death of loved ones steal Sophia’s energy and time for her art, fueling in her a perennial tug-of-war between fulfilling her domestic duties and pursuing her own desires.

Spanning the years from the 1830s to the Civil War, and moving from Massachusetts to England, Portugal, and Italy, The House of Hawthorneexplores the tension within a famous marriage of two soulful, strong-willed people, each devoted to the other but also driven by a powerful need to explore the far reaches of their creative impulses. It is the story of a forgotten woman in history, who inspired one of the greatest writers of American literature.…

My Review:
I received a free copy of this novel from Penguin Random House in exchange for my honest review.

The House of Hawthorne is a fictional,  yet fascinating, look on the life and romance of Nathaniel Hawthorne and Sophie Peabody.  From the day they met, Sophie and Nathaniel were kindred spirits.  Their love had no bounds.  Even when their daughter Una was sick for months with Roman fever, the family closeness kept them going.  This was a fantastic glimpse into the life of the Hawthornes, as well as several authors from that era. One that I thoroughly enjoyed.
