Amanda's Eyes Book Review

Think what you see is what you get? Better think again.

Waking up is the pits when you come to in a hospital with a broken arm, a colorful assortment of abrasions and contusions, and a face swathed in bandages. It’s even worse if you can’t remember what hit you.

The bad and the ugly are crime reporter Amanda “A.J.” Gregson’s business. But learning she had a ringside seat for an explosion that killed two agents of the Continental Intelligence and Investigative Service (CIIS), incinerated an entire block of warehouses, and did so much damage to her eyes they had to be surgically removed? Well, that gives the darker side of life a whole new meaning.

Haunted by elusive nightmares, A.J. waits for her transplant and struggles to remember the events leading up to the fateful night of September 4, 2075. Weeks crawl by without a glimmer, before memory finally floods back the night before surgery, every detail brutally clear.

The explosion had been the work of the Ferrymen.

“The Ferrymen. My not-so-magnificent obsession for more than a year. Only a cataclysm could have made me forget. I guess you could call them hitmen. You could also call Einstein a math whiz. Think ruthless. Think unstoppable. Think killers so proficient ‘caught the ferry’ was fast replacing ‘bought the farm’ in common usage, and you have the Ferrymen in a nutshell.”

The transplant surgery goes off without a hitch—welcome news, because A.J. is raring for a rematch with Hell’s Boatmen. But contrary to popular belief, what you see isn’t always what you get. Take her new eyes, for example. Those baby blues may look perfectly normal, but they possess a power that turns her world upside down—the power to see into the hidden dimensions of the human heart.

When the Sight unmasks the mastermind behind the Ferrymen, the unveiling is as stunning as it is unbelievable. The revelation sets her on course for a second head-collision with evil. Will she survive the final encounter?

My Review
I received a free copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.  The year is 2075, cars no longer just drive on the roadways, they also fly in the sky. There's wonderful advancements in medicine which our main character, Amanda Gregson, has been a lucky recipient.

Amanda Gregson is a brilliant crime reporter. She stops at nothing to get her story. While doing a report on a group of criminals called "The Ferrymen", she uncovers an operation told to her by her informant. She tells the CIIS, and she along with two agents go to investigate. Little did she know it was a setup, and before she could warn the agents and get herself to safety, a bomb explodes killing the agents and leaving her blind. Thanks to modern technology, the doctors are able to replace her eyes. The only problem she has now is that she sees far more than she should.

This was a great suspenseful book. Everything happens so fast, and you wonder if Amanda was hallucinating. The chemistry between Jack and Amanda is instant. Although, nothing happens between them, I was certainly hoping there would be a connection. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel, it was an edge of your seat page turner. If you like suspense novels, this is certainly a book for your To Be Read pile!

The Rainy Day Killer Book Review and Giveaway

Synopsis:
A man in a business suit offers the protection of his umbrella to an unsuspecting woman ... and several days later she turns up dead on a river bank, raped and strangled. Homicide Lieutenant Hank Donaghue leads the investigation as the killer begins to communicate directly to him through phone calls and grisly packages containing body parts of his victims. Assisted by FBI profiler Ed Griffin, Donaghue and Detective Karen Stainer pursue an elusive predator who leaves no physical evidence behind.

The timing couldn't be worse, however, as Karen Stainer's attention is divided between the investigation and preparations for her upcoming wedding. My Review:
I received a free copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review. Someone has been killing women during rain storms.  The police’s only witness is an elerly woman that witnessed the abduction.  Now every woman in Glendale is on high alert, looking for a man in a suit with an umbrella.  Will they catch the serial killer before he kills again?  What’s with his fixation with Karen Stainer?

This book puts you on an emotional rollercoaster as you wonder, could it be him? The development of the story was well paced and made this a great page turner.  Although this was book 4, it’s very good as a standalone.  My only issue with the novel was that I feel that I was left hanging.  We do find out who the killer is, but no reason why he started doing it or anything about him.  There are loose ends that I felt would have satisfied my curiosity and made this a five star novel.

The Key Book Review

The Key (The True Reign Series, #1)
by Jennifer Anne Davis

~SYNOPSIS~

Within these pages lie kingdoms with castles and princes who fall in love with fair maidens, but make no mistake−this is no fairytale.

His father’s kingdom is on the brink of upheaval and at the center of it all is an ordinary girl who could be the key to its undoing. When faced with the ultimate choice, will he choose the girl he’s falling in love with or the kingdom he has sworn to protect?

An ordinary girl with an extraordinary past. All she wants is to be free. What she doesn’t realize is that freedom comes with a price she can’t afford to pay. She’s forced to accept the proposal of a prince she despises, even though her heart belongs to someone else . . . his brother.

Seventeen-year-old Rema lives in a brutal kingdom where travel between regions is forbidden, people are starving, and looking at someone the wrong way can mean death. Nineteen-year-old Darmik is the king’s son and Commander of the King’s Army. He spends his days roving the island, doing his father’s bidding and trying to maintain control over the people.

When a chance encounter throws Rema and Darmik together, they share an instantaneous connection, but any sort of relationship between them is strictly forbidden. Darmik’s brother, the Crown Prince, notices Darmik’s interest in Rema and, in a calculated, political move, blackmails her. Faced with an impossible choice, Rema is forced to sacrifice her heart in order to save her family.

As Rema is taken to the palace with the Crown Prince, Darmik confronts the growing rumor that a legitimate blood heir to the throne exists and is trying to overthrow Darmik’s family. In Darmik’s quest to hunt down and kill the threat, he discovers that nothing is as it seems. Locked in the king’s castle, Rema finds herself a key player in a massive power struggle. When Darmik shows up, she’s not sure if she can trust him. The line between friends, enemies, and loyalty becomes blurred. As truths are unlocked, Rema understands that she just might be the key to finding the rightful heir and restoring peace to the kingdom… if she can manage to stay alive long enough.

~ MY REVIEW ~

Greenwood Island is being invaded by Emperor Hamen and will stop at nothing until the entire royal family has been exterminated, at least so he thought. Royal Commander Mako vowed to keep the last living heir safe. Seventeen years later, we see Rema has grown into a lovely young woman. She's raised by her "Aunt Maya" and her "Uncle Kar", raised on a farm, she has a love for horses. A chance encounter with Prince Darmik awakens desires to travel and seeing other lands instead of her current future as a farmer's wife. Unfortunately, Prince Darmik' s brother has more sinister plans for Rema. Will Rema fall prey to Prince Lennik's plan? Will the real heir finally return to the throne?

The Key is a great coming of age story. I wasengrossed in the story from the very beginning. This novel focuses on a medieval kingdom wrought by the tyranny of an evil king. There's suspenseful moments as Rema continually gets close to finding out who she really is. This even has a great romance! The only disappointing thing I found with this book is that it's a trilogy and the end leaves us hanging! I can't wait for book two to see what happens to Rema. Jennifer Anne Davis has written an amazing historical fiction novel, one that I truly enjoyed and I'm sure you will too!

My Review:

I received a free copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review. What would you do if someone required your assistance to bring someone back to life?  Franco Lorenzi lives a mundane life as a professor; everything seems fine until James Easby calls upon him to assist a distant relative.  This is when his life suddenly becomes chaotic and endangered.  At a party thrown by Easby, Franco becomes enraptured by a beautiful young Parisian actress, Eva Thibault.  Their attraction is instant and although a seemingly unlikely pair, they become a force to be reckoned with.  Who can they trust?  Can they even trust each other?

This was a fascinating fast paced novel that toggles between 1894 and 2009.  We also travel from Italy, Paris, London and Switzerland as we search for information and letters regarding The Evelyn Project.  This was an amazingly creative story that kept me turning pages.  There were so many twists in the story that I couldn’t put the book down!  I loved the main characters, they were so determined.  I appreciated the fact that the romance wasn’t rushed and it was worked in perfectly.  I think this was a great paranormal mystery that everyone will enjoy!

About the Author:

Kfir was born and raised in Italy, and moved to Israel as a teenager. He acquired the love for the English language from his father, a former U.S. soldier and WWII veteran, a voracious reader and a prolific writer. With a PhD in chemical engineering and a long family history that he needs to live up to, Kfir work as a patent attorney and heads the patent law firm that was established by his great-grandfather in Milan, Italy, in 1869. Kfir lives in Omer, Israel, with his full-time partner, Esther, their four children, Michal, Lilach, Tamar and Yonatan, and the dog Elvis. Writing has always been Kfir's passion and for almost four years he wrote a weekly "Patents" column in Globes (Israel’s financial newspaper), which also yielded his only (if he can help it) non-fiction book, THE WORLD OF PATENTS, (a not-so-boring tale of what patents are about, in Hebrew), which was published in 2002 by Globes Press. Kfir loves writing short stories but has too many novels waiting to be written (and possibly not enough years ahead of him to write them all), so now he mostly writes full-length fiction.
