Survivor Book Review

*Novella companion to Sanctuary

What if the Biblical End Times unfolded in a way no one told you about and the rapture didn’t happen before the tribulation began…

Aliens have attacked and Rory’s mother is missing, but none of that matters much to him. He’s safe in his apartment complex, has his friends and his twin sister, Hailey. But as supplies start to dwindle, it becomes obvious that he needs to do something to make sure they all survive…even if it means he has to brave going outside through the Shisa and the zombies people have become. As long as they are safe, that’s all that matters, right?

My Review:
I received a free copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review.

Survivor is book two in the Sanctuary - End Times series.  This portion focuses on the group of people Mr. Harris left behind at his apartment complex.  Rations are getting low, and the teenagers are finding it difficult to find food and water.  As you can recall from Sanctuary, the aliens have poisoned the water supply and the Shisa roam the streets in the hunt for people. After thirst overwhelms Rory's twin sister, Hailey and she drinks the tap water causing a tragic outcome.  Rory, his best friends, Tion and Jose, along with Mr. Lee and Mr. Conway, begin raiding nearby homes for food and water.  At first things are looking up and they finally have enough food and water to stave off dehydration.  Then surprisingly the Shisa get smart, and things become more dire than ever before.

This is an unusual end time series with zombies and aliens.  I love the description of the aliens, it's truly unique.  I enjoyed finding out what happened to the people at the apartment complex.  I was curious what had happened to them during Sanctuary, so I'm glad that was the focal point of this novel.  There's nonstop action, heart stopping moments and even some really sad moments.  Although this is a novella, Pauline Creeden causes a plethora of emotions.  I can't wait for the next book in the series.  This is a great Christian dystopian science fiction series for all ages!

Left Behind for the Hunger Games Generation

In a heart-racing thriller described as Falling Skies meets The Walking Dead, Jennie struggles to find a safe place for what s left of her family. But it seems as though there is no place sacred, no place secure. First the aliens attacked the sun, making it dimmer, weaker, and half what it used to be. Then they attacked the water supply, killing one-third of Earth s population with a bitter contaminate. And when they unleash a new terror on humankind, the victims will wish for death, but will not find it…

When the world shatters to pieces around her, will Jennie find the strength she needs to keep going?

Sanctuary crosses boundaries and borders and incorporates elements of all kinds of action and intrigue, from thriller-like adventure to a post-apocalyptic tale of life after aliens invade. Thus it will delight readers seeking something truly different, while disappointing those who anticipated a shallow, one-dimensional subject and story line.”

resistingredemptionHappy Release Day! This is the third book in a series where the plot points carry over. All plot points will be resolved by book FIVE – the end of the series. This is a sweet style romance.

With her heart at war with her mind, Lisa’s need to chase dangerous fun over boring responsibilities tugs at her emotions. Love is the last thing she expects to find, especially with her past revolting against her future.

The only love Ryan’s heart has room for is for his motherless son. But, when he finds himself yearning for Lisa, Ryan has to convince himself and her that he’s all the thrill she’ll ever need.

Will Lisa’s past destroy their future before either of them can accept the true meaning of love?

Amazon / Barnes and Noble / iBooks /Kobo

Too much of himself was going into Lisa. Too much thought and nervous anticipation. He couldn’t focus on his breeding schedule for the next year because he wanted to think about the gold glints in her dark hair when the sun hit it just right. And her smile. Great, he sounded like a poorly written parody of a love song. Next thing he’d be waxing about how green the trees were or how the water sang in the creek.

He fell back to sit on his butt, wrapping his arms around his knees and clasping his hands together. Not one of Charlie’s punches had hurt half as much as hearing that Lisa’s ex had returned. By the look of it, Charlie wasn’t there for a happy-to-see-you-let’s-get-back-together kind of a thing.

With Wanda back to see Jesse and his own confusing emotions about that and now with Lisa’s ex in the picture, maybe things weren’t supposed to work out between Ryan and Lisa. He hated complicated. Complicated ended up hurting others and Ryan wasn’t fond of pain.

Pounding hooves thudded dully on the damp field. Ryan lifted his head and sought out the source of the sound.

Speeding toward Ryan astride Pig, the veterinarian’s horse, Slate MacAllister yelled. “Heeyaw!” Reins flipped from side to side as he pushed his animal even faster through the bison speckled field.

Startled, Ryan jumped to his feet, tucking his hammer into his tool belt and moving to stand beside his horse.  Slate didn’t slow until the last minute, bounding down from the saddle before his animal had even stopped completely. Bright red splashed across his light blue button-up shirt and covered his arms and hands. Flecks freckled his face and neck.

“Ryan! Hurry! Come with me. I can’t do this alone and Robbie’s in town with Ronan.” Slate’s hands glistened with still-wet blood.

SurviRal Book Review

The deadliest flu season in a hundred years is about to turn a whole lot deadlier. When an accident at a famous medical research facility lets a mutated avian flu strain out, a nightmare scenario unfolds. Before authorities can react, millions are infected-and that's just the beginning. The mortality rate exceeds 80%. Leaders and elected officials soon learn the man-manipulated virus respects neither rank nor stature. The resulting chain reaction leads to a collapse of modern society-even in Colorado, where no cases of the killer strain have yet appeared.
Clint Stonebreaker, a happily-married software engineer living in Denver, doesn't like watching the news. He especially doesn't let Jake, his wacky doomsday-prepping brother, watch it when he visits. But when chaos goes viral through the entire country, Clint and his wife Jenny are forced to acknowledge reality. They find themselves hitting the road with their gun-enthusiast neighbor to escape the deteriorating city. Their goal? Reaching Clint's hunting cabin in Southeastern Colorado and trying to make a homestead of it.
They don't get far before running into a gauntlet of obstacles. Colorado seems to have become a giant sociological experiment, with dire consequences for making the wrong decisions. The spirit of American resolve is pitted against the ugly realty of criminal opportunism in every direction they turn. Ironically, Clint isn't sure which is worse: being forced to survive in the midst of civil unrest, or knowing he'll have to admit to Jake that he was right. Assuming he can find him...

My Review:
I received a free copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review.

When an mutated outbreak of H5N1 Virus escapes from a laboratory by way of ferrets in the Netherlands, it quickly becomes a world pandemic.  Jake Stonebreaker has been a conspiracy theorist for as long as his brother Clint can remember, so when Jake begins warning his brother that things aren't what they seem and that the virus is spreading rapidly and the infrastructure is collapsing, his warning falls on deaf ears.  When things turn for the worse, Clint, his wife Jenny, and neighbor Harold, journey to Jake's cabin in Springfield where he has been stockpiling supplies for this very reason.  Little did they know that their journey would be treacherous and forever life-changing.

Surviral is an amazing doomsday scenario novel.  The scariest part is that it's extremely plausible.  This story is well written, and I found myself getting lost in the moment.  You're immediately pulled into the story as you read about how everyone reacted to the outbreak.  My only wish is that other than a brief two sentence mention of the prisons, there wasn't any mention if they were all released because there wasn't any food to feed them, or if those that joined Zane Savage's gang were escapees.  All in all, this was an awesome albeit realistic read.

About the Author:

Ken Benton appears to be your run-of-the-mill city slicker at first glance, blissfully playing with his iPhone at the bar of the local barbeque joint while sipping on craft-brewed IPA. But he has a secret passion: doomsday survival prepping. And if you ever snuck up behind him to see what he was reading, it would likely be one of those apocalyptic-survival stories set after the collapse of modern society. Yes, he’s one of those nuts. But someday soon, Ken believes, those nuts may become the new upper class in society. Until then, we’ll just have to make do with story-telling. And preparing. Cheers!

Beyond lay the bridge’s foyer; the place where Priscilla, or Amanda—the ship’s two physical avatars—took turns providing the main interface between the humans and the Intrepid. The avatar’s pedestal was empty and the holo emitters were offline. Even more than the main hall, this room had always been a riot of light and color—usually white, grey and light blue if Amanda was ensconced, or red, pink and violet if Priscilla was running the show. Tanis slipped through the darkness, a shiver ran down her spine and Tanis couldn’t help but feel like she was the only person on the ship.
There wasn’t a single person who hadn’t looked out into the cold, dark blackness of space and feared falling into it, lost and alone in the emptiness for eternity. Out here, far from even the most rudimentary civilizations, Tanis couldn’t help feeling those thoughts creep into her mind again and again.
She took a deep breath, pushed the tendrils of fear aside and strode down the corridor to the left, past the executive conference room toward the bridge.
Her nano arrived first and sent an image back showing it to be empty, a fact she confirmed moments later as she stepped into the heart of the ship.
She drew another deep breath through her nose. There were traces of human pheromones. Her augmented olfactory system informed her that people had been here a scant five or six hours earlier.
Tanis felt the solitude pressing around her ease back as she settled into a duty station. The holo interface sprang to life around her and she brought up the last month’s logs.

Mr. Tumnal Book Review

Everyone has an imaginary friend. Rarely do they marry their imaginary friend. Only one has ever had their imaginary family become real.

Lewis Tumnal is in his early thirties, and a teacher of English and Creative Writing, and he’s old before his time. He wears a corduroy jacket with patches on the elbows, but he’s likeable and friendly and a popular teacher all the same. He’s quiet and uncomplicated, happiest when talking around his subject area. He lives in a big, old, Edwardian house in the north of a Wren Hoe – a university town on the edge of the Cotswolds. He has a wife, and a daughter of eleven years who loves her father, and who is loved by her father. He has a passion for photography and is a member of a local photographer’s society and helps run a night course at college.

But Lewis Tumnal and his family are the imaginary lives of Louis Tumnal, a withdrawn and lonely bachelor, ill at ease with himself in social situations. With few friends, he goes to a night course in photography which he loves, but he keeps himself very much to himself. That is, until he meets Kathryn…

Kathryn Summers joins the photography class mid-term and immediately forms a bond of friendship with Louis. His uncertainty around people, and in particularly women, makes for an awkward friendship though. It is all the more awkward for Mr Tumnal, and the life he believes to lead with his wife and child. As his relationship with Kathryn develops, so his marriage falls apart, and his make believe world spills out into the real world.
Purchase: Amazon

My Review:

I received a free copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review.

Mr. Tumnal is a unique fantasy novel about a young man, Louis Tumnal, a teacher that is haunted by the melody that he first learned to play as a young boy.  Ms.  Leroy, the woman who took him under her wing and began teaching him music, has now become headmistress of his former school and has given him a teaching position.  It isn't until he meets Kathryn at a photography course that things begin to take a sinister turn. Kathryn begins to question what is real and what is really fiction.

The story in and of itself completely surprised me.  In the beginning, because the story toggles between Lewis and Louis, I began getting confused and wondering if Louis was completely looney.  Once I got the hang of their being a Lewis AND a Louis, the story flowed seamlessly.   I have honestly never read a story quite like this one, and the fact that even though I was baffled at what I was reading, adding the fantasy aspect made it amazing, I would never have guessed in a million years that it would have turned out the way it did.  This was an amazing fantasy, well written through and through!

About the Author:

I'm different. I'm not your usual person. Lots of people can say that about themselves but with me it’s true. Just ask my wife! I only discovered how different in the last ten years when I discovered that I have Asperger’s Syndrome, which is on the mild end of the autism spectrum. In subtle, subconscious ways it affects my writing. For someone who is, on occasion, somewhat clueless and inept in social situations, I have been praised on my dialogue. Then a body fell onto the Vatican doorstep.

Soon, a pattern emerges-- people who go into the Pius XII historical archives are dying. Each time, a priest has been in the background-- a priest close to the Pope. One of the victims was an al-Qaeda operative, drawing Scott "Mossad" Murphy of Israeli intelligence to Rome.

Now, Ryan, Murphy and Figlia must join forces to unravel the mystery around the Vatican, as even the man Giovanni is supposed to protect looks like a suspect. To get out of this alive, they must discover if Hitler's Pope was a Nazi collaborator, or a pious man.

My Review:
I received a free copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review.

A Pius Man is book one of The Pius Ttrilogy.  In this story, we see Giovanni Figlia, captain of the Vatican special services trying to uncover the mystery behind the murder of a couple of people using the the Vatican Achives. As the safety of Pope Pius XIII comes in to question, the group of investigators grows along with the death toll.  As they begin to question what was so important to stay hidden to warrant murder, they uncover a conspiracy that spans World War II to present day, with mercenaries that will stop at nothing to keep their secrets hidden.

I must admit that this story was awesome.  It's far from a very light read, but I promise that if you stick with it, you'll be quickly engrossed in the plot.  There's even a couple of twists that completely caught me by surprise.  There is nonstop action and the story does seem plausible and the scenes quite realistic.  I hated to see this story end, but check back in the coming weeks for my review of books two and three in the series.

Read below for an excerpt from the book:

Chapter 2:  Dr. Altman

“The patient seems to be developing more symptoms. Her dreams are showing no improvement. May need to look into her medication and alter it slightly—”
“Dr. Altman?”

Dr. Altman hit stop on his recorder as a nurse walked into his office.

“Ah, Nurse Mary, how can I help you?” he asked the nervous nurse standing in his doorway. She bit her lip as she opened the door further.

“I’m just checking on Rory’s progress. I was sent by the director,” she informed him.

He swiveled his chair around, looking out onto the grounds below. He had been working for the Spindle Ridge Asylum for one year now, and he was constantly asked about certain patients by the director. It’s a part of his job he was used to, yet normal routine would be the director waiting until he was done with his reports. He would then hand deliver them to the director and wait for her to schedule a meeting. This director had more say, an annoying approach. After each session with a patient, either Nurse Mary or one of the other many nurses came to his office and interrupted his recording sessions.

“Doctor, did I come at a bad time again?” Mary asked. She knew how impatient he could be. She stood there waiting for his reply.

Finally he turned his chair and stood up. He walked to Mary and patted her on the shoulder. “No. I’ll go to the director myself, Mary. Save you a trip.” Accordingly, he walked out the door and up the flight of stairs leading to the director’s office, leaving a confused Mary in his wake.

He reached the door of the director of the asylum. Her office sat on the top floor overlooking the ocean view that sits just outside the asylum walls. She, by far, had the best view of the place; even better than his view of the gardens. He knew she was unprepared for his arrival, but he knocked anyway.

“Come in, Mary, you idiot—” She stopped short seeing Dr. Altman at the door. “Oh, I am terribly sorry, Dr. Altman. Do come in.”

Dr. Malisa Fenwick, or Dr. M for short, was a tall woman with raven black hair that she kept pulled so tight that he feared for the safety of her eyes. She smiled at him. It was always a disturbing smile, never quite reaching her eyes.

“I came about my session with Rory; you wanted to know about it. So instead of sending nurses to my office, I will come to you,” he said matter-of-factly. “I feel it’s better this way.”

Her smile faded fast, and she nodded her head motioning for him to take a seat. He did but kept his eyes steady with hers. Dr. Altman was not scared of Dr. M, not for a second. The staff may flitter around her like scared little children, but he was a man of science and would not be intimidated by her.

“Well?” she said impatiently.

“Rory’s progress is slow. I can tell you that much right now. I was in the middle of my recordings when I was interrupted by Mary. I was going to give you the full report after lunch,” he explained.

“Peter, let’s be frank, shall we?” she asked even though she really didn’t want an answer. “Just tell me what your suggestion is.”

She sat back into her plush, white leather chair. It matched all the other pure white furniture in her office.

“Okay then, I think you have an unhealthy obsession with my patient,” he blurted. “You can’t wait for my official report, ever. It’s not fair to me as a doctor and it’s unfair to the patient.”

Dr. M stood fast, her chair flying out from behind her. She was mad and that anger had no problem reaching her eyes. They flared with hatred for him as he sat in front of her.

“How dare you come in here and diagnose me! You know what that girl did! I am merely keeping track of her progress. Progress that she is apparently not making, according to you.” Dr. M stopped, took a deep breath and continued. “I’m afraid that if you can’t make some sort of progress with that girl within two weeks’ time, I will be asking you to step down as her doctor. Do you understand?”

She said this as calmly as she could.

Dr. Altman’s face turned red with fury.

“You’d take her away from me after all this time? Do you know what that would do to her? What that would do to me? She trusts me!” he shouted.

“Dr. Altman, I’m not worried about her missing you when you’re no longer her doctor. I am, however, worried about whether or not she starts remembering why she is here in Spindle Ridge. It’s detrimental that the girl gets better and understands what she did to land herself here.”

“This is not a jail, Malisa. This is a hospital for the criminally insane. She doesn’t need to remember the awful things she did. She just needs to understand that what she did was criminal and the difference between right and wrong.”

“And you have two weeks to get her to do so. Now, Peter, leave my office and never come here unannounced again,” she said as she fixed her skirt and recovered her chair.

“I’ll do my best, Malisa.”

Just before he slammed her door he heard her say, “You’ll do your best or you’ll be sorry.”

My Review:
I received a free copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review.

For as long as Andi could remember, all she's ever dreamed about was becoming an author.  She had her future all planned out, so when the opportunity to be an assistant to Ford Delaney, a very successful novelist, she jumped at the chance to apply for the job.  Unfortunately, their love of writing isn't the only connection the two of them share, and soon their attraction to each other is something they cannot deny.

I have to start off by saying that I'm not a huge fan of romance novels. The stories have to have a lot of history and intrigue to draw me in and hold my attention. This is one such book!  The story is something I'm sure we can all relate to.  We all have an idol that we look up to, and to have an opportunity to learn the business from them would be a dream come true.  You can understand how torn Andi feels over her attraction to Ford, even trying to understand her jealousy over the relationship Rachel had with Ford.  I loved the premise of the book as it was from the point of view of an aspiring author.  The story did get a little slow in the middle, and it seemed to drag a little but overall it was a fantastic small town romance story.

Approx. 322 years after the apocalypse
Chapter 1.

The body lay on a two-piece metal pyre in the center of the clearing. Nothing more than the skeleton of a table, the pyre was simply used for the display and transport of the bodies. Burning the dead was a custom from the time before.

The corpse’s blue cotton, long-sleeved shirt was buttoned all the way to the top to hide his injuries, and the matching navy slacks had recently been pressed. With his hands folded over his abdomen, Wesley looked rather dashing. Ashley wished her match had actually been dashing in life.

She wondered who would wear that outfit next. Nothing was ever wasted on the island. Not even the clothes of a dead man. She herself had worn the clothes off a dead woman’s back. Squeamishness was a luxury no one could afford. Although “new” clothes were made on the island, from animal skins and the cotton grown in the farmlands, they were typically reserved for the higher ups—elders, doctors, and the like. Cotton was difficult to grow in the cold climate, and the clothes were made entirely by hand. Once it had been worn and patched a few times by those with power, new clothing was eventually passed down to the lower branches of society.

But, it wasn’t just clothing that moved on after an islander died. All of their belongings were redistributed among those in need. The dead’s family wasn’t allowed to keep anything they didn’t need. Sentimentality was a lost emotion to the islanders. Reusing everything was essential, even if the previous owner was a dead man.

It had only bothered her once—the first time she’d seen one of her father’s outfits on another man. Even then, at the tender age of ten, she’d understood it was bound to happen eventually. She just hadn’t expected it to happen so quickly. Only a week after his funeral, she’d spotted one of her neighbors walking down the road in her father’s clothes. She ran to him, hoping her father’s scent might still linger on his shirt. But the man neither embraced her nor offered her any sympathy. He only looked at her with wide eyes, the horror and disgust plain on his face. Death on the island was such a strange thing. She’d lost track of how many funerals she’d been to in her lifetime—at least one a month. Unexpected deaths, like that of her match, added to the average.

Only three of the losses had actually meant something to her—her mother, her father, and now Wesley. Her father’s funeral was, of course, devastating, made more so by the fact that they’d shared the same first name. Everything the elders said about him could have also been applied to her. How they were thankful for “Ashley’s life,” how they wished “Ashley peace.” It sent shivers down her spine.

Once, she’d asked him why they shared a name. His mother’s name had been Ashley, he’d explained, as had her mother, and her father before that. On and on, down the line, the name had traveled, until it had reached Ashley. And one day, as was their tradition, it would go to her own child.

The funeral for her mother, who had been taken by a simple cold that escalated into something much worse, was nothing more than a hazy memory. Still, Ashley missed her mother terribly and felt incomplete without her. She searched for her whenever the jasmine got caught on the wind, because her mother had loved to wear the flower behind her ear.

Wesley’s funeral was a problem. She wasn’t entirely sure how she felt about it. The loss of her parents had left her feeling completely alone. She’d hoped to find love again with her match, but he’d left her terribly disappointed.

Now that he was gone, her emotions warred with themselves. Relief was the biggest player fighting for space in her mind. Relief to have escaped the abuse and the pressures of being the next elder’s wife. Guilt came in at a close second, but not because she regretted killing her match.

It was because her best friend was being blamed for it.
