Cost of Survival, Book #1

COSfrontAnger isn’t an emotion anymore, it’s more of a survival mode I can’t afford to let go.

My dad predicted World War III would happen in his life, but he died two years before… with my brother…

…before Mom and I walked in search of refuge from the bombing.

Strengthened by her faith, Mom never feels alone. But me? I don’t know what to believe or where to turn. Someone once said keep your friends close and your enemies closer, but I disagree. Friends scare me the most. They know me and my mom. Nothing about them is safe.

The ones in charge… Control everything…

Crud, I’ve started crying because I’m scared I won’t survive World War III. But a bigger part of me is scared I will.

My mom is bleeding in my arms and she’s making me promise to follow her three rules.
Pray. Don’t trust anyone. Stay alive.

How long do I need to break all three?

Exchange Rate, Book #2

exchangerateI’m pregnant and I couldn’t be more excited. But the community Bodey, his dad, and I live in has rules. Rules that make Mom’s rules seem like safety nets.

Only 200 people are allowed at a time. My baby will make it 201.

The leader is making me choose someone from our house to die so there will be room for my child. Either I make the decision or they take… my…

Even in the craziness that the world has become, I refuse to believe only 200 can live in it at once.

The “community” is safe-ish, comfortable. We have food, warmth, and there isn’t immediate danger of being robbed while we sleep.

Doesn’t it make sense we’d have to exchange something for all that?

I’ve survived this long. Maybe that’s enough. Maybe I should die so my family can live. Or maybe I can get through the lines and find a people worth sacrificing for.

Worth of Souls, Book #3

WOSfront Running for my life and six months pregnant, I’m terrified but confident in my decisions. With my love and family behind me, captured by the same man who chases me, I have only a small window to find help. The baby needs to come out eventually.Nobody said the end of the world would define people so much. Everywhere I turn I have to prove my worth.Mom was gone before I learned my value lay in my eyes. Not others. But how would that save Bodey? How could my worth change how the world me spins? If I can’t figure it out, everyone I love will die, trapped in a place where even following the rules won’t protect us.

The Broken Globe Book Review

Liana Tyr is a master swordswoman, but, because of her sex, has not yet seen a single battle. Varian Tyr is expected to be the next Duke of Dereven, but is outshone by his twin sister in combat, and unsure of himself in affairs of state. Sylvan, the youngest Tyr, has studied magic for most of his life, but feels constrained by the rules placed upon him, whether from his tutor, or from the gods themselves.

After the abrupt death of their father, the three Tyr siblings must venture forth into the wide world of Telkorria in search of The Broken Globe, a legendary artifact that prophecy foretells will either save the world or destroy it. But along their journey, as they deal with loss, doubt, abandoned responsibility, and even attacks on their sanity, they begin to realize they may not be up to the task.

What makes a fantasy? Is it the magical creatures and places, the history and lore, the sense of wonder? Can fantasy be more than that? As the Tyrs struggle to cope with the impossible task before them, the walls of their world begin to break down, and they begin to question everything they ever knew.

My Review:
I received a free copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review.

Varian, his twin sister Liana, and younger brother Sylvan are on a quest to fulfill a prophecy from The Book of Truth. Unfortunately, the twins haven't read or been told about the great book since they were young children and Sylvan never has.  But their father has been murdered by a demon, and now they must find the broken globe and put it back together.  There quest spans into vast continents, putting in them through a perilous journey and forging unlikely alliances.

I have to admit I was a little disturbed by this book.  Don't get me wrong, it starts really good and I had very high hopes.  But once the siblings begin their quest, the story began to stray and I was left wondering why, for example, we needed to know of Liana's menstrual cycle.  I was also thrown by Varian's sex scene when he's orientation up until this point wasn't completely confirmed.  I was a bit bothered by that and for nobles, these people swore like sailors.  That doesn't seem to make any sense to me at all.  I really hope that book two makes up for all that book one is lacking because it has the potential to be a really great series.

My Review:
I received a free copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review.

Every month Karl Orion writes a check for twenty thousand dollars to a mysterious woman. His wife Gloria thought they were doing okay running their pallet factory, until she went through the books and the numbers didn't add up.  The business is going bankrupt and she now realizes her husband has been giving money away, who is this Mira Ogilvy? Why is Karl giving her their money? She hires PI Baker Davis to find her, only what he finds is a dead body.  Who killed Mira? What was the motive?

This story teaches about family, struggles, and how to look beyond what is directly in front of us and see the big picture. You could feel the pain that the Lewis family felt daily from their loss.  Personally, I felt angry at Gloria and Karl's greed, they came across as cold and heartless. This was a great story of the human heart and one person's determination to right a wrong. My only issue with the book is that I don't have closure, we never do find out who killed Mira.

The Pharaoh's Daughter Book Review

“You will be called Anippe, daughter of the Nile. Do you like it?” Without waiting for a reply, she pulls me into her squishy, round tummy for a hug.

I’m trying not to cry. Pharaoh’s daughters don’t cry.

When we make our way down the tiled hall, I try to stop at ummi Kiya’s chamber. I know her spirit has flown yet I long for one more moment. Amenia pushes me past so I keep walking and don’t look back.

Like the waters of the Nile, I will flow.

Anippe has grown up in the shadows of Egypt’s good god Pharaoh, aware that Anubis, god of the afterlife, may take her or her siblings at any moment. She watched him snatch her mother and infant brother during childbirth, a moment which awakens in her a terrible dread of ever bearing a child. Now she is to be become the bride of Sebak, a kind but quick-tempered Captain of Pharaoh Tut’s army. In order to provide Sebak the heir he deserves and yet protect herself from the underworld gods, Anippe must launch a series of deceptions, even involving the Hebrew midwives—women ordered by Tut to drown the sons of their own people in the Nile.

When she finds a baby floating in a basket on the great river, Anippe believes Egypt’s gods have answered her pleas, entrenching her more deeply in deception and placing her and her son Mehy, whom handmaiden Miriam calls Moses, in mortal danger.

As bloodshed and savage politics shift the balance of power in Egypt, the gods reveal their fickle natures and Anippe wonders if her son, a boy of Hebrew blood, could one day become king. Or does the god of her Hebrew servants, the one they call El Shaddai, have a different plan—for them all?

Purchase: Amazon | Barnes & Noble

My Review:
The Pharaoh's Daughter is the beautiful story of Anippe, the woman that found Moses in the Nile and raised him as her own.  Anippe witnessed her mother's death giving birth to her baby brother.  She was only five years old, but it made a lasting impact on her life.  She experiences so much loss in a short period of time.  But because her marriage to Sebek placed her on the Nile, she learns of El Shaddai through the living testimony of her Hebrew slaves.  When her deceptions come to light, her loyal slaves come to her rescue and she becomes Bithiah.  But will she learn to forgive herself?  Will she accept El Shaddai as the one true God?  Will she finally see that God put her on that path because of his plan and purpose for her life.

This was a beautiful story of enduring, unfailing faith.  You get a glimpse into the lives of the Hebrew slaves, their strength amidst their oppression is just awe inspiring.  There's several heartbreaking moments where I actually started crying and had to stop reading for awhile because I was so moved.  I can't wait to read Miriam's story when it comes out.  I loved the part when Bithiah finally understood about God's peace and loving someone completely.

My Review:

I received a free copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review.

Delfia was your typical teenager, or so she thought.  With her sixteenth birthday coming up, she wants what every teen does, a driver's permit and a car.  Unfortunately, her birthday brings more tragedy and heartache than she can bear.  Her adopted parents have been murdered, and people are trying to kill her.  As her father is dying she hears a cryptic message in her head telling her to find Alec, that she can trust him.  He takes her to meet Cassandra, the woman that has written the prophecy  of the Bright Fire.

This was a great fantasy novel, it was fast paced and quite a page turner.  I'm not sure how Delfia was able to function after witnessing her parents' murder.  Then to be told that your biological parents are mythological beings.  I'm not sure how she wrapped her head around that as quickly as she did.  This is a wonderful clean read that expands your imagination.

Storm's Siren Book #Review

“I raise my chin as the buyers stare. Yes. Look. You don’t want me. Because, eventually, accidentally, I will destroy you.”

In a world at war, a slave girl’s lethal curse could become one kingdom’s weapon of salvation. If the curse—and the girl—can be controlled.

As a slave in the war-weary kingdom of Faelen, seventeen-year-old Nym isn’t merely devoid of rights, her Elemental kind are only born male and always killed at birth — meaning, she shouldn’t even exist.

Standing on the auction block beneath smoke-drenched mountains, Nym faces her fifteenth sell. But when her hood is removed and her storm-summoning killing curse revealed, Nym is snatched up by a court advisor and given a choice: be trained as the weapon Faelen needs to win the war, or be killed.

Choosing the former, Nym is unleashed into a world of politics, bizarre parties, and rumors of an evil more sinister than she’s being prepared to fight . . . not to mention the handsome trainer whose dark secrets lie behind a mysterious ability to calm every lightning strike she summons.

But what if she doesn’t want to be the weapon they’ve all been waiting for?

Set in a beautifully eclectic world of suspicion, super abilities, and monsters, Storm Siren is a story of power. And whoever controls that power will win.

Purchase: Amazon | Barnes & Noble

My Review:
I received a free copy of this novel from  HarperCollins Publishers in exchange for my honest review.

Storm's Siren is a wonderful fantasy novel about turning your curses into gifts, and finding perfection in imperfection.  Nym has had fifteen slave owners in her short sixteen years.  She's moved from home to home since her anger caused the fire that killed her parents.  Now, her new owner, a rather strange woman, insists that Nym can be trained to control her storms and thereby be a pivotal weapon in the war between kingdoms.

Nym, on the other hand, sees it as a curse and struggles with the guilt of the pain she has caused.  I loved the relationship between Breck, Colin, and Nym. They became fast friends right from the start.  The budding romance between Eogan and Nym took my breath away.  I loved watching it grow and the world that Mary Weber has created is absolutely amazing, she has written a fantastic novel.  The story does leave us hanging and I absolutely cannot wait to read the next book in the series.

About the Author:

Officially though: Mary Weber is a ridiculously uncoordinated girl plotting to take over make-believe worlds through books, handstands, and imaginary throwing knives. In her spare time, she feeds unicorns, sings 80’s hairband songs to her three muggle children, and ogles her husband who looks strikingly like Wolverine. They live in California, which is perfect for stalking L.A. bands, Joss Whedon, and the ocean. Her debut YA fantasy novel, STORM SIREN, is available now in bookstores and online, and SIREN'S FURY (book 2 in the trilogy) will be out June, 2015 from TN HarperCollins.

1. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
I’m a stay-at-home mom first and a writer second. I figured I’d work into my next career slowly—though I’m not sure averaging five books a year is what some would call “slowly!”—and devote myself to the early years of my kids’ lives and so far, so good. I’m thrilled to be there for soccer games and tennis matches, school plays and special events, but I’m also grateful to have an outlet for my creativity. When I’m not writing, reading or being mom, you’ll find me out in the garden. I find no better way to toil the time away than wandering among the rows of my organic garden. It’s quite satisfying. Some days it’s a lot of work, mind you, but it’s well worth it.
 2. What inspired your book?
Not Without You was inspired from my many trips to Colorado. I love hiking and being outdoors and I thought, why not share this extraordinary place with readers? Not many will ever experience a hike above ten thousand feet so I’ve done my best to bring it home for them. Lisa, my heroine, is what I fondly refer to as a “granola.” We both like being outdoors, working in harmony with nature, eating healthy and of course, ruggedly-handsome men. Enter McIntyre Walsh. This man would make any woman want to head to high country!
3. What are you working on now?
Currently I’m working on book #3 in the Silver Creek series, All About You. Wainwright Ranch is a working ranch where terminally-ill children can find unique healing. For a few weeks in their young lives they’re not treated different because of their illness but as productive members of a team doing a job that requires results. Katharine Wainwright is tasked with saving the ranch from bankruptcy. It’s her mother’s dream Since her mother’s death, finances have been in a free fall.
4. Who is your favorite character?
That’s a tough one. I don’t have a character per se but instead, love each one for different reasons. Lisa is my kind of friend to go hiking with and enjoy the wilderness—except we wouldn’t be chasing toads. Walsh is definitely my kind of man to take camping—especially by the light of the campfire.
5. Is anything in your book based on real life experiences or purely all imagination?
The plot is loosely based on real events. Lisa’s dedication to her toads is a very real devotion for many in Colorado, while Walsh is pure imagination. Okay, he’s fantasy material, straight up. But we all need a little steam in our lives, don’t we?

About Dianne:

Dianne lives in Central Florida with her husband, two children and part-time Yellow Lab--Cody-body! When not whacking away at her keyboard crafting her next novel you'll find her in their organic garden chasing grasshoppers and plucking hornworms all while drawing wild analogies between kids and plants and men. Definitely men. A girl's gotta have fun, right? When she's not knee-deep in dirt or romance, Dianne contributes garden advice for various websites and volunteers in school gardens (a crazy existence to be sure). But at the end of the day, if she can inspire someone to stop and smell the roses--or rosemary!—kiss their child and spouse good-night, be kind to a neighbor and Mother Earth, then she's done all right.

Booker: Streets of Mayhem (Booker #1)
On a cool October afternoon, the majestic blue sky above Dallas is polluted with swells of gray smoke, carrying shattered memories of fifteen people, mostly children, who've just been killed by an explosion on a bus.

A white supremacist group claims responsibility, opening old wounds, turning neighbor against neighbor--fracturing the community. A Southeast Dallas native, Booker T. Adams couldn't be more invested in the city…in the people he'd served for the last seven years as a beat cop for the Dallas Police Department. Without warning, it becomes personal for Booker on so many levels. And as panic grips the city, he must decide how much he's willing to sacrifice to end the chaos.

With his career called into question and his family in the crosshairs of one terrorist act after another, Booker invests every fiber of his being to protect a broken community, and to stop the brutal, senseless slayings.

If he fails, terrorism will reign in the city of Dallas.

 My Review:

I received a free copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review.

Booker T. Adams is a former Dallas Police Officer turned Private Investigator.  He met his gorgeous girlfriend at the scene of the horrific murder of her fiance on their wedding day a few months prior.  When a ballerina is found murdered at an event they are attending, Booker is hired to investigate the crime.  Added to that, Scianti, the mob boss, is at it again; trying to show the Double Ds that he owns them.  Meanwhile, at the same time, Booker is determined to take down the dirty cops that forced him into early retirement.

This is a suspenseful murder mystery that draws you in from the very beginning.  I was at the edge of my seat and could not wait to see what happened next. There's also lots of humor, as Cindy throws herself at Booker repeatedly. Mr. Mefford has a great imagination and his series is one every mystery lover will absolutely love.  Be sure to check out my review next month of Booker Hate City, the next book in the series!

When he’s not writing, he chases three kids around, slaves away in the yard, reads, takes in as many sports as time allows, watches all sorts of movies, and continues to make mental notes of people and societies across the land.

John lives in Frisco, Texas with his beautiful wife, three opinionated kids, and a feisty fat cat who rules the world.

Spring Into Books: Outsystem Excerpt

Major Richards needs to get out of the Sol System.

Demoted by the military and hung out to dry, the media labels her the Butcher of Toro. Despite her soiled record, Tanis still one of the best military counter-insurgency officers in the Terran Space Force.

And they need her to find the terrorists responsible for trying to destroy the GSS Intrepid, a massive interstellar colony ship in the final phases of construction at the Mars Outer Shipyards.

It’ll be her ticket out of the Sol system, but Tanis discovers she is up against more than mercenaries and assassins. Major corporations and governments have a vested interest in ensuring the Intrepid never leaves Sol, ultimately pitting Tanis against factions inside her own military.

With few friends left, Tanis will need to fight for her life to get outsystem.

Read excerpt of Outsystem:

Joe leaned over the transport cocoon the ring medics had settled Tanis in. Even in her current state she couldn’t help but notice the concern and moisture in his eyes. “That was the worst ten minutes of my life,” Joe said. “I nearly died when I heard the shots.”

The tubes in her throat restricted her method of communication. She didn’t mind; it helped hide her emotions.

A look of anger flashed across Joe’s face. “I can’t believe that Trent is all you want to talk about right now. Look at you! You’re in pieces, and all you can talk about is your job.”

Grenwald stood across the transport cocoon and cast Joe an unreadable look before putting his hand on the commander’s shoulder.

“We’re all pretty concerned about you, Major. But don’t worry, we’ll do our jobs.” He nodded to the two of them and walked away to oversee Trent’s preparation for transport. Tanis wanted to sigh, but it hurt too much. The pain in Joe’s eyes hurt too, she knew because she felt the same thing. What was the point of getting the Intrepid outsystem if she killed herself doing it?

“It seems that pretty much everything is easier than feeling for you.” He turned away as the medics began moving her cocoon into the ambulance.

Path EbookThe colony ship Intrepid is falling into a star.

The ship’s AI has lost control of the engines and core systems. Battling a saboteur who strives to isolate him, his last act is to wake Colonel Tanis Richards from stasis.

Tanis finds herself alone on a dying ship, unable to contact the AI. She must discover what has happened and save the Intrepid from burning up in the star’s angry red light.

Even if she is successful, the journey to the colony world of New Eden is just beginning. With decades of travel ahead, she will have to find a path in the darkness.
